This started as a country town street scene, and it was ok, pleasant but nothing to get excited over, so I hung it up and didn’t feel excited over it for almost a year. Then something clicked in my brain and I went back and reimagined everything, based on a 1980s road trip to Houston, back when the high-rise downtown changed to a “shotgun shacks” neighborhood within a single block, with an elevated freeway in between. This isn’t Houston, obviously, but that memory gave me the idea of a city encroaching on small town life, looming over it, for better or worse.
