One of my first figure paintings, this started as a rough colored pencil sketch of a dancer. The building and street came later, as the background colors I added began to blend and show me where the picture wanted to go. I know it sounds odd when I write things like that, but pictures do, in fact “want to go” places, not on their own of course, but somewhere deep in my own mind there are images and scenes sitting, and working at the easel with the paint brings them out, bit by bit.
